I have a habit of writing a book based on my interpretation of a song. While Message to New York was first drafted when I was sixteen, I’ve begun rewriting it (completely starting from scratch).
My husband is a music executive, working in the publishing industry, so I have the pleasure of hearing much of the music which passes his desk. One of the best songs I’ve ever had the chance to listen to is “Savior” by Ally Rhodes. As I sat down to rewrite Message to New York, I realized how perfect this song is for my book.
My motto is that if you can visualize your book being made into a movie with a special song playing in the background as the movie plays, then you have yourself a theme.
My advice? Go with it. Roll with it. Live it. Let the inspiration seep through your writing.
